For the second year in a row, the UNM basketball team has a win before the UNM football team. Maybe it's three years in a row, but I'd have to do some research (and it might be even worse to know for sure). Besides, three years ago, we didn't know how stupifyingly bad the new UNM football coach was. Just that, possibly, he was kind of an asshole to his coaches. And his secretary. Maybe we should have known, but mostly we were gonna give him a few more mulligans before getting really mad.

Now that coach is gone, his assistant coaches are, possibly, even more clueless about how to run a college football team, and we've given up on winning any games this year. They did score for the first time in three weeks last night, but it was such an oddity, the radio announcer said the score was 35-0 near the end of the game. He corrected himself about a minute later, although without comment to his incorrect score. It might as well have been 35-0. Like 42-0 last week. And 69-0 the week before.

Although I'm sure no one takes bets on the football lobos anymore, I'd bet my house we go 0-fer this year. And I don't have a house.

The UNM soccer team also has a zero in its record, but in a totally different place. Last night the UNM soccer team finished the regular season undefeated by besting UNLV 3-0 in front of the second largest UNM soccer crowd ever: 5,284. So 16-0-2, and they go to the tournament ranked number one in the country.

The football team still outdraws the soccer team. It would be embarrassing for the football team to only draw a little over five grand. Here's my question though, why would between 10-15K go to a football game they know in their hearts is going to be ugly, dispiriting and that the home team will lose?

Football, soccer, football, soccer. Beer, beer, water.

But, in all honesty, Lobo Nation is ready for some basketball.

I don't know much about the UNM soccer team, except they've been pretty good for the last few years. This morning was the first time I read anything about any of the UNM soccer games this year. I'd noticed two weeks ago that they were ranked #1 in one poll (the other... and, seriously, they have more than one collegiate soccer poll?...had UNM at #2).

My brother and I debated whether or not it was ironic that the football team can't win and the soccer (football) team can't lose. I'm still not sure if it's ironic.

It's sad for the football team. And depressing for us fans. Except I think we're over it. We could see it coming since losing our first game of the season (the closest we've been to winning all year).

But the soccer team doesn't show on TV. Maybe one or more of the tournament games will. And, maybe, when they play another home game, they'll be able to break that attendance record.

It would certainly help wash the taste of utter failure out of a UNM sports fan's mouth.
