5.22.11 What a beautiful day! by Matt Worley It was an even better punchline than the whole Sunflower Foods Yogurt fiasco (which is, admittedly, a local punchline...but months later still pretty golden). And I certainly milked it, because it was so freakin' obvious. But Saturday was so nice. So positively non-Rapture. Almost as if something or someone was thumbing its nose at the supposed apocalypse. I was running a bit slow in the morning. Suddenly it was almost 10:30, and if I wanted a breakfast burrito, I'd have to get a move on. My neighborhood Lotaburger (which serves bb's until 11 every morning) was positively packed, but I managed to get there at the beginning of a big rush. The "breakfast is almost over" rush. Maybe we all tied one on the night before, but, for the most part, we all waited patiently as the cooks fixed our orders. The guy at the window thanked me and added, "Have a great day!" when I picked my no meat red chili burrito. The only real deadlines for the day were in the afternoon. A play and a horserace. But I had a few things to do beforehand. Wine and Wal-Mart. Both stops were quicker and cost less than I thought they would. There was only one thing I didn't find: Christmas lights. Apparently they are out of season. The string in my living room went half dark a couple of days ago. New lights are still on the vine, I guess. Even so, I wasn't vexed. And when I was unloading my case of wine from the trunk, my neighbor waved and asked if I'd ordered up the beautiful day. "Oh yeah, totally," I said. "Keep up the good work!" he said. That's right. Far from being a victim of the Rapture, I'm actually a local god of weather. And maybe I am a god. In as much as we are all gods of our own lives. Which would usually lead me back to making fun of the people who really thought their god wanted them to come live in heaven so much they forgot to actually live their lives. But it was such a nice day. No time for snipes! My brother picked me up for the play, which was at the same theatre I played God in God (by Woody Allen) last August. A funny, harmless, children's version of Treasure Island. A couple of the actors were also in God, and they thanked me for coming to the show...and delaying the Rapture so they could get their performances off. Yes, that's correct. Twice in one day I was addressed as a god. On the same day the Rapture was supposed to happen. What are the odds? I did not win the Preakness. My picks were the Derby winner Animal Kingdom (had to bet on the possible Triple Crown when he won the Derby for me a couple of weeks ago) and Astrology. They came in second and third. Then I had to take a little nap. Gods need their rest, too. A trip to the grocery store (the aforementioned Sunflower) followed for foods and fruits and sushi rolls. I was in a bit of a post-nap haze and floating around the store. Everyone else seemed to have a little more purpose than me, but it was probably just my state of mind. After paying, I was drifting out when one of the other checkers said, "Sir!" Would it be three times...? "I love your t-shirt!" I was wearing a William S. Burroughs shirt. I said thanks and gave her a thumbs up. And, after seaweed and sushi, I spent much of the evening working on my band's recordings. I think we're pretty close to the end...of this album.
