The end of the world...once again
by Matt Worley

"Have Mercy" the blood red advertisement on the electronic billboard read. With a scorpion icon. And then it flipped to something else. Either a Jiffy Lube spot or APD "Have you seen this bad bad man?" warning...or are they advertising NOT catching the bad guy? I never can tell what the cops are really trying to do.

So I had to drive by the billboard one or two more times before realizing what the blood red scorpion was trying to say.

The world is coming to an end. On May 21st. And, just in case we can't do math and drive at the same time, the days left is counted down for us. We've got a little over a month to go, people. Uh, go about your business.

This whole thing is from a 91-year old preacher guy who predicted the world would end in the late 90s. It didn't—or all we all dead and still thinking we're still alive? Are we in the Matrix? Is this what all of the movies from 1999 were trying to tell us?

Apparently, he screwed up the math the first time.

I understand. In a college statistics class, I was tied for the top grade with one other guy going into the final exam. I ended up with a B for the class because somewhere in one of the two problems on the final I went off course. Once you screw up one calculation, the rest of the problem is fucked.

Guess that's what happened with end of the world man.

Knowing this (the billboard's been up all week), I still paid my taxes.

An old friend was in town last week, and we had a couple drinks on Friday. He asked me what I had coming up.

"I'm gonna get these songs mixed (my band's latest recordings), and I still have to go in to work everyday." That was all I had. Maybe the world is ending. I should have the songs done by then.

And yet, "Have Mercy"?

Every time I see that (and it's on a street I drive down at least once a day...near work), my reaction is, "What's your point?"

Genius math preacher has also calculated that 2% of the population is going to heaven in the Rapture. I'm pretty sure I'm not in that 2%. So telling me about it is kinda like bragging, isn't it? But have mercy? On who? For what? So much they should be explaining to us, but there's only so much room on an electronic billboard.

And so I end up driving the few blocks to work and going about my business.

I assume there are billboards like this all over the country. The great calculating reverend isn't from Albuquerque. He just bought some ad time here. Hopefully he's paid up through the end of the world, so I can keep track.

At a Tea Party rally on Friday in Albuquerque, one participant said he wasn't really paying attention to the government or politics until recently, but it seems like it's gotten worse. That's almost an exact quote.

I guess I could say the same thing about the end of the world. I haven't been trying to figure out when it's all gonna go down, but I guess things have gotten worse. Trying to have conversations with people playing with their phones certainly does piss me off.

Surely Satan has something to do with it all.

Matt Worley isn't making any firm commitments after May 21st just in case. At the same time, Memorial Day is his next holiday from work, so hopefully we'll still be struggling through it all then.
