2.13.11 A sticky note ain't gonna cut it by Matt Worley "I don't have a girlfriend, but, then again, I don't have a lot of hassles." This is my bandmates' favorite quote...of mine. There's another one about sock puppets that gets play, but this one is happily repeated much more. Everyone knows Valentine's Day is a made up "holiday" that is designed to milk boyfriends, husbands and love-soaked secret admirers of whatever cash they've managed to save since Christmas. Everyone knows this, but expectations are still high. We know restaurants have special menus that are at least 20% more "special" (expensive) than regular. We know roses cost more this weekend by as much as 50%. We know that if we eat all that chocolate in those heart-shaped boxes, we're gonna need a post-Valentine's day diet. But it doesn't matter. If you love someone (other than say, family members), you better show them on Valentine's day, or they might show you the door. Or put you in time out. There have been a lot of breakups recently--both by famous couples and by people I know personally. And, while I know they were not because someone didn't want to pay for another expensive Valentine's Night Out, I think there is some relief that they can skip the pretense this year. I can't remember a "great" Valentine's Day, and it's mostly because I'm not seeing anyone, so why would that day be any greater than any other day of the week? It basically means I'm not going out that night. In fact, I think I'm going to reserve a nice bottle of wine from my rack right now. That and some spaghetti leftovers should go down nicely. Needing another day to remember the one you love is kind of like saying Veterans need another day to remember them. But it doesn't matter what I say. Most of the attached will expect something (or expect that something is expected). I say most because there are some out there who, out of principle, will want absolutely nothing for Valentine's Day...and then expect a day (maybe in July) that is very much like Valentine's Day--but not. Because deep down, we all want to feel loved. And our modern society has set aside February 14th for that day. The good news for guys who forget important dates is that you can't miss it. There are pink and red and hearts and dinner packages and pajama-grams all out there right now to remind you. Suck it up, because this is what happens when you don't live by my opening quote.
