7.10.11 Say a hypothetical SUIT column by Chris Jungle Say you had a little daughter. A little helpless little girl. And something happened to her. Maybe it was an accident. Maybe you did something intentional. Either way, your little daughter is dead. Say you didn't tell anyone. You lied to people that your daughter was dead. You made up a nanny named Zanny. You made it rhyme so you wouldn't forget. You lied to your family. You lied to the police. You lied to everyone. No matter, your little daughter is dead. Say about month after lying, someone found your little dead daughter in a the trunk of a car. She looked awful. Worse than normal dead children. Her mouth was duct taped. Her body decomposed. It was an awful sight, your dead little daughter. Say you went to jail and were charged with the murder of your little daughter. Did you do it? You won't say you did. You will plead not guilty. Say the media got a hold of the story. The pictures of your daughter is put on the television. The cute smiling pictures of your daughter, and also the mutilated decomposing pictures. The court of public opinion vilifies you. Is it right to do that? Maybe you did kill your daughter. Maybe it was an accident. Your little daughter is still dead. Say you spend a thousand days in jail. Everyone thinks you're a monster. Are you? Nobody knows. Nobody knows what happened. But why did you lie about your dead daughter's whereabouts? Why did you lie to your family? How did your child end up in the trunk of a car to rot? You say nothing except 'Not Guilty.' Say the trial occurs on television. You sit in silence. Your lawyers admit that you lied to the authorities. You've already been in jail long enough to eat those charges. The prosecution accuses you. Your defense confuses the court. Everyone waits for the inevitable conclusion of your guilt. Say your found not guilty. Say the prosecution didn't prove you guilty. Say there is public outrage. Say the prosecution says they will retire. Say you will be free this week. Say this ordeal will finally be over. Except your little daughter is still dead. She was dead when this whole thing began. Say this really happened. Would you believe it? Would you mend your ways? Would you have another child? Would you cash in on your child's tragedy? Say what you will. We have a strange and sprawling legal system, and these things do happen in America.
