I sat in the Motor Vehicle Department waiting to register the family mini-van. A task I had avoided for a few months. I had all the proper paperwork with title, emissions results and insurance. On the TV, there was Headline News. I used to watch Headline News a lot when I was younger. 'You give us fifteen minutes, we'll show you the world.' Since they started catering to housewives (lots of amber alerts and shocking court drama reports), I quit watching. But there I was in the MVD, waiting for my number to be called and peeking at the screen.

The top story they kept showing was Weiner's resignation, showing the picture of his bare chest repeatedly. The second story was an explanation that terrorists and the Taliban were now recording rapes on their phones and sending them to the media: a new war tactic. What was shown on the screen was a blurred out picture on a cell phone and a woman moaning. Maybe she was moaning in pain, maybe in pleasure. It was hard to tell.

That was the news: Weiner's chest and blurred out moaning.

Weiner's chest had been revealed a week before, so what's one more look at a guy who's quitting Congress? But what's up with the rape? It's one thing to tell us women are being raped in every country around the globe, but to show us a blurry picture and translating the moans for us is a bit too close for snuff to me. "She's saying 'I can't bear it, I can't bear it. Leave me be.'" Personally, it all sounded like 'Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh,' to me.

Why do we need to see this during the noon hour on a Thursday. Am I supposed to become outraged and join the armed forces? Should I feel like I've witnessed the horrors of war? Should I hate the Taliban more? Seriously, I just have to register a car.

It seems like TV news will get as much skin (or blurry images implying skin) as they can. Is this what we want to see, or is it what they want to show us?

I looked around the MVD, and most people weren't even watching the TV. There was moaning with explanation. 'I can't bear it,' she is saying. 'I can't bear it.' Apparently, we can bear it. We bear it so much that it doesn't phase us. What's another blurred out image on a cell phone? What's another story on sexting, or kidnapping, or murder, or molestation, or mutilation, or mauling, or malfeasance?

Just another day in the world with too many people, too many ways to communicate, and too many opportunities to record ourselves doing anything and everything.

I waited patiently for a half an hour, listened to nearby people have conversations on their phones, watched the headline news, and eventually paid for a car to be registered. Nobody even commented on the blurry rape. I guess that MVD crowd is hard to impress.

Chris Jungle won't have to go to the MVD for another six months.
