Little lessons
a learning SUIT column by Chris Jungle

Who says you have to go to school to learn? It appears I keep learning things all the time...even if I didn't ask for it.

Japan had a huuuuuuuge earthquake. Thousands dead and wounded. The big thing now is that a nuclear reactor is going into meltdown. This sounds horrible. Meltdown always sounded like the worst thing that could ever happen to a nuclear reactor. I popped on CNN Saturday morning and it took the nuclear reactor expert 90 seconds to completely bore me on the subject. How can something so dangerous and life threatening be so lifeless and monotone? I learned I'm not interested in nuclear reactors.

My wife turned 23 this week. It seems like just yesterday she was an eighteen year old pretending to be twenty. They grow up so fast, don't they?

One of her relatives gave her an iPod for her birthday. This sounds really cool (for the technologically hip), but it gave me a lesson in antiquated operating systems. For those who didn't know (like me), an iPod must be hooked up to your computer and put in sync with iTunes for its playlist. The iPod was too advanced for my version of iTunes, so I downloaded the latest version. I then discovered that the new iTunes was too advanced for my version of operating system (10.4.11). You needed at least a 10.5. Okay, according to Apple, you can get a $29 upgrade to receive Snow Leopard, which is upgrade from Leopard. What animal did I have? More searching...I discovered my operating system was Tiger. More searching...I discovered that you can still use the upgrade with Tiger if the chip is made by Intel. Mine isn't. In the end, we decided that the new iPod will have to sync up with my brother's new computer. A new operating system to appease an iPod doesn't make much sense, and there is no guarantee that my basic computer would understand a new operating system. I learned new technology only works with other new technology. Once again, I vow to live life with as little tech as I can stand.

FYI, I gave my wife a fine bottle of vodka for her birthday, and it worked just fine. No upgrade required.

I learned that the local government in the New Mexico border town of Columbus was purchasing guns and ammunition to sell to gangs on the other side of the border. The mayor and police chief were caught red handed by federal agents. It seems like someone is always ready to profit from the misfortune of others.

This week, I have received more letters in the mail from lawyers than ever before in my life. All because it was posted in the public record that I was a victim of an automobile accident. I was rear ended a month ago while driving the cab. I suffered a mild concussion and lost out about $50 of potential rides. Rather than trying to collect, I'm just going to keep living my life without lawyers. I have learned life is better than way.

Little lessons happen every day. There are no more pencils, no more books. No more teacher's dirty looks. No more spring breaks or final exams. No one asks me to recite anything or solve a mathematical equation, but somehow I keep learning.

I'll learn every day until the nuclear reactor melts down, and we are no more. Talking about it is still a bore.

Chris Jungle had no idea operating systems were felines.
