Big food brain buzz
by Matt Worley

I have a short work week. And yet, it seems those two days will take a while to get through. Before, y'know, I get down to the rest of the week. The vacation part.

I've been scouting out the specials for the best place to buy my meat sacrifice for the vacation gods.

I thought I'd get a really healthy chicken as the main attraction, but a free range fresh chicken costs more than a free range fresh turkey twice the size. Free range fresh chicken is $3.99 a pound. Free range fresh Turkey is $1.49. I can't eat that much free ranging turkey (they don't have little free rangers, all of them ate a bunch of range as far as I can tell), and I can't see paying $20 for a chicken, no matter what it ate before the slaughter.

Eating better sure is expensive. This is no time for that. We're supposed to have cheap meat this time of year. Isn't that what it's about? The supermarkets thanking us for buying food from them all year. So they give us the cheap meat?

I do have a few other supermarkets to check out before I break down and get a Wal-Mart Thanksgiving meal. Which would still be better than the dreaded Chicken McNugget Thanksgiving meal with plastic toy.

My Wednesday is starting to fill up. It's my vacation day before the vacation. I have to recycle and get all my food for the great slow cookout on Thursday. Clear out the empty containers and then refill. Plus, cooking up the pumpkin pie on Wednesday night. At least I'm ready with the wine and all.

And then, on Saturday, is the fish holiday meal with family.

I don't have to worry too much about what everybody else wants on Thursday. Nope, that's all about me.

Thank you, me!

If the turkey is cheaper than anything else, should I just go with big turkey for the economy of it all? And then, y'know, have turkey for two or three weeks after? I think I'll get tired of that much turkey. Decisions, decisions.

And then, well, it's the beginning of holiday party season, too. I can't believe we have to keep going into work. Shouldn't work give us all the next month and a half off? Y'know, to thank us for coming in the rest of the year. Why work when we can just have parties and big pieces of meat and assorted drinks and silly hats?

I guess we have to pay for all this meat and drink. That's where the work comes in.

It's not that I'm hungry right now. Not as I type this. But the promise of big food is working its way into my brain. Buzz, buzz...

Here's to the big bright fantastic meat eating later in the week! I like these holidays better than the ones where we don't get great food and have to ponder dead people.

Matt Worley knows how to cook the meat.
