Batten down the hatches
by Matt Worley

It was the last best chance for the Lobos to win a football game this year. It was the last best chance for a warm weekend afternoon grill. It was the last best chance for many reasons, but mostly because fall is gonna start falling.

We had a freakin' hot September. Usually September is the nicest month of the year. Warm days, cooling nights. Maybe a little cold in the mornings, but nothing too bad. This year, however, it was like an extension of August.

My landlord's managers turned off our swamp cooler the weekend before Labor Day. I don't know when they did this last year, but I don't remember there being four weeks of way too hot days for there not to be a working swamp cooler at my place. I'd come home from work and it would be ninety degrees inside. If I was lucky, I'd get it down to eighty by the time I had to go to bed. Sometimes I wasn't lucky and would leave all the doors and windows open all night.

So it was hot when it should have been warm. Now, a week into November, we've been right around average for the last few weeks. But a nice warm up this weekend provided a couple of surprises. A great grill and the Lobos not going O-fer the season. Thank you Wyoming!

But it's gonna get cold now. Preparations must be made. And probably today.

By the way, my iTunes has played a couple of Christmas songs in a row. What is it trying to tell me?

So I have to cover my bedroom window with plastic. And trade my fan for my heater in said bedroom. Eventually I'll have to think about getting cold weather beer, but I'm still in the between times of Boddington's and bocks. Porter, Guinness and other assorted stouts will find their way into my fridge soon. Maybe they won't even need to be in my fridge.

We might freeze one morning this week. Maybe many mornings.

And every morning I'll uncurl from the warm blankets and comforters, flick on the heater in the bathroom, and cringe when the first few seconds of shower water hits me like ice water, quickly warming to a steaming spa.

Y'know what's just freaking stupid about me preparing my apartment for the cold?

For some reason, the air conditioner will still come on at work.

Matt Worley doesn't mind the winter, but he does wish fall had been more cooperative this year. Climate change deniers, my ass.
