10.24.10 Up in arms by Matt Worley I don't listen to Katy Perry. Or watch "Glee." I don't even listen to radio at all (public radio or corporate 20-song playlist music stations). But I read the jabber, because it's everywhere on the Internet. Was it a month ago? Or just yesterday when "Sesame Street" had to pull a rather innocuous Katy Perry segment because she has breasts. And you could, kinda, see some cleavage as she sang to Elmo. I checked it out. I was bored at work. Is it me or are people a little touchy about stupid shit these days? Maybe it's the election. Everyone wants to get up on their soapbox about whatever. They see a bunch of idiots campaigning for government jobs and figure they should spout off, too. Like we need more of this. Of course, the idiots running for government jobs usually have something stupid to say about these cultural events, as well. Have I asked this question before? Why do people spend millions of dollars for jobs that pay much less? Are they so big headed they really think they are the big saviors of our little universe? And, so thinking, must spend more than most people make in their entire lives for a couple of years in power? Doesn't this pretty much make them uniquely unqualified for the positions they are running for? They claim to be regular people, but no matter what they're wearing or accent they're affecting, they are living a life almost every other human being on the planet does not. And so, they are not representative of the people they claim to represent. Which kinda goes back to the whole beholden to the people (or companies...most likely companies these days) who give them the money thing. This week I saw a story about a hot GQ Glee shoot. So I clicked on it. And, yes, they are some hot photos. I printed a few out using the company color printer. I don't watch the show. I'm sure it's a fun show, but I'm not in high school. And I wasn't in the glee club. I was in the band, and our versions of pop music were the most stilted and cold you've ever heard. No matter how good the trumpet player is, it ain't gonna sound like a guitar solo. For a couple of days, there was hoopla. One of the actresses in the photos apologized (well, kinda, she also asked why a parent would buy GQ for their kids...which was a completely fair comeback), and the one with the more "scandalous" photos didn't say a thing. And today? It's not on anyone's radar. If you're worried about your little girls dressing up like their favorite celebrities, well, they're gonna. If you're worried about your little boys having a crush (and maybe fantasies) about girls on TV, trust me, they will. There's this one Madonna video called "Open Your Heart" that I must have...uh, nevermind. And, on the non-sexy side, NPR sacked one of its radio guys because he was saying anti-Muslim slurs on the air. So FOX news and their talking heads got all up in arms about it, declared that all federal funding for NPR be cancelled...and then hired the guy who was fired. To a better job. I'm thinking this crazy media circus works. How would FOX know who to hire if some other network didn't fire them first for saying something stupid? This is kinda like Sarah Palin demanding that the government shouldn't pay for elections because she lost her VP bid. But she couldn't say that and run again. Which, of course, would give her a chance to quit a couple of years into the job because of the inevitable backlash against her administration. It'd be really hard to be a lame duck President, huh? Might as well quit and go back to your crappy TV shows. Which is why my band's new demo EP has a painting of a naked woman on it. Except it's not. Or maybe it is. What do you think? Would someone like to get all up in arms about it? We need the publicity.
