9.19.10 Smash! Bang! Boom! by Matt Worley The football season started on Monday night around the same time the rain started pouring in Kansas City. The defense really started hitting. The offense started running, and the San Diego Chargers looked positively baffled. I wasn't expecting it, but really appreciated it. Earlier in the day I'd told my younger brother our defense was looking scary. And I'm not sure why I said that, because I hadn't seen anything from the preseason. I'd look at the scores of the games, but didn't read much into them. It was just one of those feelings. And my feelings about how a sports team will perform can be completely wrong a lot of the time. But the NFL football season started crazily, amazingly and with a win for the Chiefs. We're undefeated and in first place. What the hell? The baseball season is almost over, and I'm rooting for the Royals to not lose 100 games (almost there!). And maybe finish in 4th instead of 5th (this weekend hasn't helped in this quest). The Lobo football team still sucks. Our coach started an argument in a bar with a couple of college reporters. I don't think it's gonna get much better. At least the coach is entertaining off the field. One wonders why he can't seem to get the team to respond to all his crazy emotion. As long as they don't fire him. I'm tired of paying people not to coach. Make him do his job--even if he's no good. But the Chiefs, after one week anyway, have pretty much surpassed my expectations for the year. So I've got them running on the computer while I write this. We're up 3-0, and it seems as if the defense is working pretty well against Cleveland. I'm used to rooting for losers. It kind of fits with my self-deprecating personality anyway. But it certainly is nice when the losers win once in a while. Of course, this is the kind of excuse a lot of people use to explain Fantasy Football. Their team sucks. They want a reason to watch other teams play. Let's face it, if you like football, you're gonna watch a lot of football--especially on Sundays. Are you a child? You need a carrot? Just grab a beer and some munchies and dig in. There's football from 11 a.m. to about 10 p.m. today. It's Sunday, you ain't working, what else you gonna do? I actually do have other things to do on Sundays (most importantly, band practice), but I'll watch a little football. Even though most Sundays the Chiefs will not be on TV around here (this season's only guarantee was that first Monday night game and the ones against the hated Broncos). Anyway, I'm still on a little high from that late, rainy Monday night game. At halftime, one of the guys in the band texted me, my older brother called and then my younger brother. We were all staying up late, watching this wacky game. Millionaires hitting each other as hard as they can. And now it looks like the Browns found a way to shoot holes in our secondary. They're on the goal line. Only one way to stop this kind of thing. Smash. Bang. Boom!
