9.12.10 Can't read the handwriting on the wall by Matt Worley I'm gonna vote, but I don't blame anyone who doesn't want to. Not this time. I can't tell the difference between the two gubernatorial candidates. They look exactly alike (except one wears glasses...sometimes). A recent political cartoon tried to differentiate them by giving the Hispanic one dark hair, but the pictures I see don't show her with dark hair. Maybe I'm getting hair color blind. Sure, one is a Democrat, and one is a Republican. And they have different names. But the only thing either of them stands for is themselves. They want to be governor. Otherwise, I don't think they have any convictions about anything--except in their heads they are for exactly what the other person is against. Strangely, this doesn't differentiate them from each other at all. It makes them even more the same. Some crazy nut wanted to burn the Koran on September 11th. As far as I can tell, he preaches to the roaches in his basement. But, y'know, it's national news. And his demands? Don't put an urban mosque near Ground Zero. I watched baseball on September 11th. The Royals killed the White Sox. I drank mimosas. It was a good day. I generally don't give a shit where people build their churches or mosques or community centers. Although I still get a little bugged that the movie theater (the Lobo) I used to watch midnight movies at is now a church. Of course, it's right next to a bar, which kinda evens out the whole sin and redemption thing. Over the Labor Day weekend, I went camping for a night at a friend's parents' land north of Las Vegas, NM. I am a horrible camper. I took a tent with no tent poles. I didn't have a flashlight. But the food I pre-prepared was pretty good. And my singing at the classic rock campfire sing along wasn't too bad...I don't think. On the way home there were cops everywhere. And most of them were speeding with their lights flashing to...somewhere else. Apparently there was a place where all the cops in New Mexico were needed, and they had to get there fast. There's a note on my desk that says "Why can't we revolt like we used to?" I don't know the answer to that one. Right after I typed that sentence, the Tenacious D song "City Hall" came on my computer. It's about rising up against city hall, "setting fucking fires" and taking over the world. Oh yeah, and legalizing pot. Maybe I'm onto something. But with about a third of the year left (because arbitrary time demarcations is a good way to start the last part of a column), I cannot see into the future at all. I can't tell what's going to happen next week, much less next month. It's kinda like asking if Spicoli will pass this class: I don't know. I like that. Or so Mr. Hand says. But at the same time, I'd like to feel like I had a clue. Will a reindeer not see its own shadow, enabling Christmas to come early? Maybe I'm mixing fairy tales this week.
