Filling in the blanks
by Matt Worley

Health care passed. I mean, everyone has to buy health insurance passed. I'm not clear on all the specifics, but it seems like nothing will happen to me unless I lose my job. And then I'll have to wade into the waters. I don't like my health insurance, but I don't pay much for it.

Health insurance, by the way, is not health care. It's the (somewhat) availability of health care, and if I use it I have to pay more (co-payments each visit, each prescription, and deductible if anything really bad goes on).

In other words, if I actually get sick, I gotta pay more. Insurance just funnels that money through a middle man who takes a cut--a big cut if he can slice it. I just try not to get sick and pay the insurance company as little as possible.

I was kinda hoping to get rid of health insurance and actually focus on health care. Of course, no one asked me. They just sent me a notice that I'd get a Census form. Then the Census form itself (took two minutes). Then a postcard telling me that I should have gotten my Census form already and I need to send it in--after I'd already filled it out and sent it back.

I'm not sure what changed. Those people in the marsh seem pretty happy about it, though. After over a year of bitching, moaning, voting, obstructing, reconciling and then legal battles, they passed something. Great.

How about a chicken in every pot? I like chicken.

How about wrapping up these stupid wars? Whoa, I think I went to far.

I'm not really bitching, but these baby steps kinda get tiring. Someday we're gonna have to take full sized adult steps. Maybe step over a few things, climb a ladder, use some grout.

I'm starting to recover from losing an hour a few weeks back. My technique of waking up at 7:30 every morning without an alarm went all kablooey. I'm thinking next week will be better. And it'll totally be warmer.

Spring is here. The wind blew the town of Albuquerque off the map on Friday. And then we found it again on Saturday morning. The day before the wind we had another mountain snow shower. So much snow in the mountains the ski resorts that usually close weeks ago are still running. So skiers and boarders wearing shorts rule.

Of course the heater just kicked on because it's still cold in the mornings. Crisp, one might say.

It feels like things are moving. Not an earthquake, but just a shift. I think this is good. A shove would be nice.

I have stamps of Distinguished Sailors. I don't know who these guys are or why they are distinguished. The backing on the stamps are blank (many commemorative stamps try to explain themselves on the backs), but I think there are codes for when the sailors died and what ship or sub or whatever they were on when it happened. When they became distinguished and stamp worthy.

Will there be Michael Jackson stamps in a few years? Will we vote on pre-Thriller (black) and post-Thriller (not so black) like the Elvis stamps? And, if so, don't we all know which one will win?

There haven't been many entertainers on stamps. Not rock stars anyway. And quite a few die off every year.

Alex Chilton died a little over a week ago. I wouldn't say he was a rock star. But I have digital copies of the first two Big Star albums. And the Replacements song. I learned very little about Alex Chilton from his obituaries. They all pretty much said the same thing. But I did find out he was a hit maker before Big Star never got big at all. I dig "September Gurls." It came on my iPod last week during my commute. And then a big white cargo van tried to occupy the same space as my car.

So let the wind shake off all the dead hair that's been sitting around since winter made us all hide inside.

Matt Worley will be cooking up a nice chocolate bunny for Easter next week. That's the tradition, right?
