a reminiscing SUIT column by Chris Jungle

2010? Isn't this the year that Jupiter becomes a sun and their moons become little planets? I guess not. Once again, the actual years pale in comparison to the science fiction versions from Arthur C. Clarke.

Instead of space travel (of pretty much any kind), we are fighting a war in a region of Earth that apparently is always a war. Afghanistan is the new Vietnam with fewer casualties and more lost limbs.

Hover cars still don't exist, and auto companies brag about trucks that get 20 m.p.g. Kind of pathetic.

We had oil spills and mud slides. One was man-made, one was nature's fault. As I always say, we don't need to change our ways to save the earth. We need to change our ways to save ourselves.

Tax breaks for the rich! Tax breaks for business! A health care plan nobody understands! Long ago in the Bush administration, I realized government would not be on my side about anything. The administration has changed, but my view is still the same.

Tiger Woods cheated on his wife and can't play golf like he used to anymore, and Lebron James got tired of playing for his home state and decided to play in Florida. These were the biggest stories in sports. You would think the biggest sports story would involve an actual sporting event, but tabloids rule in 2010.

Personally this year, I got married, honeymooned, acted as a lead in local movie, portrayed Bill Clinton, directed a play called "God," and made and spent more money than I ever had in my life. I guess that's a good year, but really, I just feel tired a lot.

My daughter turned two and isn't too terrible about it. She isn't growing up too fast, but I let everyone else tell me that.

My wife got a tattoo on her back and Medusa piercing on her upper lip. Thanks to running and kicking a soccer ball, she's also back to her pre-pregnancy weight and looks great. She'll never be the 18-year old Marilyn Monroe wannabe I met almost five years ago, but she is turning into an impressive independent woman.

So there it is. I'm very disappointed in the state of the nation and the world in 2-0-1-0, but my personal life is more vibrant and volatile than ever before. I guess you deal with what you can control.

It would have been cool to have a second sun in the sky right now, but it's really out of my hands. The 20-aughts have left, and we've begun the 20-tens. Or is it the 20-teens? How the heck do we label this next decade?

Questions abound, but I'll wait until 2011.

Chris Jungle is definitely older and debatably wiser.
