11.7.10 Unwinners a Lobo SUIT column by Chris Jungle Everyone who went to college has an alma mater. The farther you get away from it, the more you just root for your alma mater's sports teams. If even that. Since I still live in the same town as my university, it's hard not to root for those University of New Mexico Lobos. When you come to Albuquerque, you will inevitably see the phrase Go Lobos on all kinds of signs. I've lived here for 18 years, so I'm the same way: Go Lobos! The men's and women's soccer teams both appear to be going to the big tournament. The Women's Volleyball team is currently in second place and has a shot at going to their big tournament. The men's & women's cross country teams swept the Mountain West Conference race. All in all, a pretty good year for the fall sports at UNM. There's only one problem. Fall means football, and the Lobos have been designated the worst football team in the country. Coming into this weekend, it has been hard to argue. The Lobos starting the season losing to Oregon (which everyone else has), but the losses kept on coming. Utah, Texas Tech, UTEP, UNLV and even the lousy state rival New Mexico State Aggies. You know it's going to be bad if you can't beat those Aggies. The situation was getting pretty dire. With four games to go, the Lobos hadn't won a game. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Even the mediocre teams beat us soundly. We made Colorado State look like a powerhouse team. That's why the game yesterday against Wyoming was pretty much do or die. Wyoming was the only other team to lose every conference game. After them, the Lobos will face Air Force, BYU and TCU. Even a lousy BYU team should beat us soundly at Provo. In this match up of unwinners, the Cowboys and Lobos looked like decent teams. The Lobos scored first but the visitors were up 21-14 at half time. After a quiet third quarter with UNM kicking a field goal, the teams starting scoring off each other or turning the ball l over every time down. The see-saw affair left the game tied 31-31 with 5:20 left in the game. The Lobos had a freshmen quarterback named Stump leading the way, and they methodically worked their way the field and kicked a field go with no time left to win 34-31. It looked easy. Like we should have been doing this every week. Finally. Lobos win! Lobos win! Lobos win! Now, I can breath. The football team will go down as another awful team, but not as an unwinner. Only the Akron Zips can claim that now. I can deal with awful football teams, but not unwinners. You just start to lose faith in everything when that happens, and then of course, basketball season comes.
The men's team has already won its two exhibition games, but technically, the football team won a game first. Technically is better than not at all. Whew. It's going to be okay. Chris Jungle has never rooted for a complete loser yet.
