I have had it with the fight. For some reason, my country has decided that we have to fight everything. The only way to fix things is to fight it. The only way to launch a campaign is to wage war on it. Enough is enough.

Every time someone gets cancer they have to fight it. When they die, they lost the fight. Personally, if I had to put a bet on who what would win in fight, Disease or Man, my money goes with the little microorganisms. Let's beat up diabetes, lash out against leukemia, kick some serious cancer ass.

When was the last time we cured anything? A little penicillin goes a long way. We just had to let some bread grow mold in a petri dish.

Huge organizations are looking for cures (a.k.a. donations) to maul cancer. Find that cancer, put in a ring with other cancer, and have them battle mixed-martial-arts style. That's something to put some money on.

But really, how long has cancer been around? As long as man has been around, I would guess. When we look at overripe fruit and see it rotting in a certain area, we never say the fruit has cancer. We either chop off the rotten part or throw the whole thing away. The only way to keep fruit from going rotten is to add preservatives. They say if you eat enough preservatives, you can get cancer. Sigh. Kill ourselves to make the fruit last longer. Still want to fight?

Of course, they have done research on the subject. Practically everything MAY cause cancer. Certain things MAY prevent cancer. Did you know that in 46 percent of men who ate nothing but broccoli for a year did not develop cancer for the next sixteen years? That's not true, but I've heard just as many reports that sound like that.

My main problem with the cancer fight is that it sounds like cancer is the source of the problem. IT IS NOT. Cancer is the result of the problem. We eat things that ruin us, we live next to power lines & radio waves & cell phones in our ears, we take lousy care of ourselves, or we just outlive the usefulness of our bodies. We can take preventative measures against disease, but I wouldn't exactly call it a fight.

The deal is that cancer is everywhere. We all know someone who died from some type of cancer. It can pretty much occur anywhere in the body. The breast, the prostate, the brain, the mouth, the lungs, the stomach, the throat, and on and on. Bob Marley got cancer in his toe and eventually died. Where is the multi-million dollar non-profit organization to fight the valiant fight against toe cancer?

The fight against cancer is like a fight against schizophrenia. We're not quite sure where or why it happens, and we're definitely not sure how to stop it. Throw some money at it. Say you're fighting it. Feel better about it because you can say you tried. You donated. Remember all the donations for Haiti after the earthquake? Did we cure earthquakes? Did we really help people? Who know? Nobody talks about it anymore. We have a new disaster now. Free oil in the Gulf for everyone!

Okay, I'm probably cursing myself to die of cancer now, but I'm okay with that. For heaven's sake, please don't fight for me if that happens. Let's just deal with it as it comes.

And what have they come up with from all your donations? Radiation treatments, bone marrow transplants, people frying themselves to the point of exhaustion just so that can live another day to do it again. A guy once told me a story about a man who had cancer. He ate one whole raw onion a day for months and his cancer went into remission. This seems as plausible of a cure as anything. I wouldn't exactly call it Fight Cancer With Onions, but it doesn't cost thousands of dollars in treatment. Onions are readily available, and if it doesn't work, the end is still the same.

So go on, stop fighting cancer, and start eating onions. Oh wait, was it onions or broccoli? Maybe just eat them both. We don't have to fight everything to survive. We just have to survive. Until we don't.
