4.4.10 White ball a throwback SUIT column by Chris Jungle All right. After five months of men's college basketball in the good ol' US of A, it's come down to Butler vs. Duke. Mid-major vs. the ACC, David vs. Goliath, white guys vs. white guys. Wait a minute, did I just say that? Did I just mean that? White guys vs. white guys! Okay, okay, it's not literally just white guys vs. white guys, but for both teams, it is not uncommon to have more white guys on the court than black, brown or yellow guys. While most of the talk on networks is about defending the three and making the most of your opportunities, no one is really saying the blatantly obvious: there's a lot of white guys playing for the basketball championship! Before you think this Jungle guy is some sort of white supremacist, I'll have you know I root for the New Mexico Lobos, who had four black guys and a Hispanic guy starting for them. Actually, it is very common for college basketball teams to sport four black guys starting on their roster. So common that we don't think twice about it. We assume the very easy stereotype that black guys are better at basketball than white guys. Remember, white guys can't jump. I have a buddy who used to play basketball all of his youth. He also was a high school option quarterback and played four years of Division III college football as a strong safety. He's a pretty serious athlete. He's also white. He still plays pick up basketball at the Y, and almost every time, the black guys assume he has no game. Not only does he have game, he can make black guys look like they don't have game. So this does happen. White guys can play basketball. Still, not one but BOTH teams playing for the national championship have really good white players. That means they both beat five other teams that probably had a lot less white players on their teams. It's not unheard of for a team of white guys to go deep into the tournament as some sort of Cinderella run. Gonzaga does it every two or three years. Some years, you get the great white hope to carry a team like Larry Bird and Indiana State or Tyler Hansborough and North Carolina. But two teams with at least two great white players? It's almost unheard of. In fact, I can't think of a matchup since I was a kid that featured such a tremendous amount of white ball. How did this happen? I. Don't. Know. Even if the refs had some racial bias toward white players, it's still hard for a team to win five games in the tournament with the help of refs. It's not a stretch to say Duke would be in the championship, and they've had white ball for years. But Butler? Wow. I don't think anyone saw that coming. I've been talking about the Last Stand of the American White Man every now and again. Pretty much accepting that the white man doesn't get to run things any more, and I don't mind. I gave up on white ball in college a long time ago. In fact, I don't think I ever believed in white ball. Sure, the Mormons in Utah fielded a few really good white teams, but I have a bias against Mormons. Mainly because they play in the same conference as New Mexico, and they beat us a lot. White ball may be good, but I don't think it's ever been this good. But here it is, the white man's basketball dream: Butler vs. Duke. Who does a white man root for? What's a white man to do? That's simple. When in doubt, go for the underdog. For once, it's not the white guys. It's just the white guys you didn't know about before the tournament. Go Butler Bulldogs!
