9.20.09 Summer's end by Matt Worley Fall is the best time of year around here. In the high desert, September and October can be the most enjoyable weather wise. And in the week leading up to the turn in seasons, the weather finally broke from the long (LONG) hot summer to something a little more manageable. And it must have thrown me for a loop, because I've been so off all week, I can't believe I made it through without crashing into a wall or someone else crashing into me. Literally and metaphorically. I forgot to shave. Not decided not to, but completely forgot. And I didn't realize it until I saw this beard growing in the mirror at night. I made a list for last weekend (things to do, y'know), and over a week later I still haven't finished it. Recycling grows under my kitchen table. The toilet is, well, growing, too. After two weeks, I finally made it to the grocery store and bought more beer than actual food. The upside being I have a lot of different kinds of beer now. Space case. That's been me. That's what going from upper 80s and dry to the mid-70s and wet did to me. Wet wet wet. We had about 24 hours of light rain. Something's been holding that in for a long time. I finally made it out to late night rock n' roll since I can't remember when (not including the nights I was doing the rocking, of course). Saw bands and friends I hadn't seen in ages. Since before summer. Where the hell have I been? What happened this summer? What hole did I fall into? I can't even remember. It's all gone. I know there was work. And work was a little trying and strange this summer. Could it have all been work? It's not like I spend a lot of extra time in the office or anything. I keep thinking that can't be it, but like the mid-90s, the specifics are lost to me. There was band practice and gigs. I know that. I do that when it happens without question. Every couple of weeks I do laundry, and that seems to get done. There's no new TV (and, after looking at what's happening on the tube this fall, there's not much new TV), so it wasn't that. I don't have special sports channels, so I rarely get to see any of my sports teams (and this is pretty much fine, because none of them are very good). So this is what they call a write off. I'm not sure what went on for the last three or four months, but it's over and there's nothing to be done about it. I'm falling into this new season like a rock from the top of the mountain. It started slow, but the momentum is increasing. See you in the foothills.
