The quiet
a silent SUIT column by Chris Jungle

I'm looking around. Nobody.

I'm listening. Nothing but the clatter of the keyboard when type.

I'm looking at my schedule. I don't have to be anywhere until 6 p.m.

This is it. The time I like. The quiet time.

My brother already came over. He's off to band practice.

My cousin already came over. She's off running her errands.

My fiance and baby girl are off with the wedding planner and grandma looking at wedding invitations.

I am alone, and I love it.

The white wine has been poured. No major responsibilities for the rest of the day.

No driving the cab. I have never driven on a Sunday, and I hope I never will.

No theatre rehearsals. I'm getting some prosthetic eye flaps made for me tonight, but I don't have to do anything but lie there while they put goo on me.

I did the dishes. I swept the floor. I cleaned up the food on the ground. I recycled. I took out the trash. I dumped the compose bucket. I watered the plants.

I read the Sunday morning paper.

I didn't drink coffee. I will drink it probably every other day this week.

My professional football team has lost again. They have yet to win. The TV is off.

I can hear the computer hum.

I don't know what to write about, but I don't care. I am in quiet time.

Bachelor days brought me many moments of quiet time, these moments of relaxation and wandering thoughts.

Family days rarely afford such times. The baby needs to make noise. The fiancee needs to express herself. The clatter of everyday life occurs.

Shhhhhhhh.

It feels so good. This quiet.

No washing machine running. No dishwasher chugging. No phones ringing or text alerts sounding.

It's as if you can actually hear and understand your body. Breathe in, breath out.

It used to be simple to get some quiet time. Now, I take it when it comes.

There is all this chatter. All these screens. These sounds. Distractions. Obligations.

How did they take over? How do they make like better?

Can't we just relax? Can't we just chill out? Can't we just calm down?

Pretty please.

Thank you.
