Lazy statements for rainy days
by Matt Worley

I thought I might be sexist today. But then that would have taken a lot of work because I'd have to back up my crackpot thoughts of MILF-y Veep choices and cranky co-workers. And who would that help? Not me, even though I am occasionally sexist, racist and all around offensive about things that happen in this world.

I did help write a song called "Republican Girls" with the memorable line, "When I'm fucking you, I'm fucking the system." It was either brilliant or the most sexist song to come out since "Used To Love Her" by Guns N' Roses. And we were just trying to be funny.

I'm just trying to put it all out there just in case someone else running for President is thinking of nominating a no one with little experience into the number two spot. I sometimes come off as an uncaring lazy ass.

I didn't think McCain was so desperate. And then I heard this morning that he really wanted Lieberman (and I don't even want to get into what I think of that guy)--apparently to shore up the cranky old man vote.

I fell for a girl from Alaska a long time ago (geez, it's been seventeen years), so I understand the attraction for a hot Republican girl who likes a little pot and heavy metal.

And I was thinking about that poll asking which Presidential candidate people would rather have a beer with. Bush won this, even though he supposedly has been sober since his 30s--maybe people wanted to push him off the wagon and see what he'd do on a bender. Are we now going to have a poll about which female politician we'd rather sleep with? Yeah, probably not, but I thought I'd throw it out there. And would you be more open about it, letting you pick any of the people running for Prez or Veep?

I've heard Republicans freak about this pick. And I've heard some say it's genius. Then there are the wishy washies who say it's good and bad. Makes me think no one really knows what they're supposed to say or think about this.

I like strong women. I should say that right now. I'm a huge Buffy fan. I thought the movie was great, and then the TV show was even better. And the new Battlestar Galactica, where the most interesting characters, most of the time, are the women (hey, there's even a woman President--although not through the entire run). I know I'm referencing fictional women, but I'm never gonna meet Governor Palin, so she's kinda like a TV show character to me anyway.

Most of the women I've fallen in love with were outwardly strong. And underneath, strangely frightened of what their strength could do. Of course, they all eventually decided I wasn't the lapdog they were looking for (or punching bag, in some cases). A personal evaluation for my continued singleness is that I don't really take much shit from people--men or women. Which, in itself, is probably a bit contradictory. I'm attracted to strong women, but don't kowtow to them--which wounds or makes them question their own strengths. Does that make me self-destructive?

But this Veep pick of McCain's isn't about her being a woman. Many of the strategists and talking heads have said this. Or they go into this generic thing about it being a coincidence that she is a woman--and then say this pick (its a she!) might appeal to those voters who were supporters of Clinton. And, by the way, it's a coincidence that Hillary is a woman. Just something that happened a long time ago, nothing can be done about it and why bring it up now?

No one wants to point at their tits and shout, "Change!" Just like no one points at Obama and says, "But he's black!" Nope, this is politics and much more subtle. Everyone talks about experience because that sounds better than, "We've never had a woman or a black man in charge--how would government even work under those circumstances?" Yeah, griping about experience sounds much better.

We're either more open minded or closed mouthed about all this. I lean toward believing the latter.

And still, if this was all about policy and experience and change and these nebulous concepts, would anyone be talking this guarded about it all? I think everyone seems to be walking on tiptoes. Which is why I'm stepping in the shit for everyone today.

But, consider this, after the rather stunning announcement of an almost completely unknown woman for Veep, the Republicans are talking about postponing their convention for a hurricane (and maybe even raising money for victims). Which is noble and the right thing to do (because, really, who wants to watch a bunch of boring speeches anyway), but also an open admission that maybe the people in charge (Republicans) when the last hurricane devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast were a little less than caring. You might even have called them disinterested in the goings on. For days on end.

If it keeps on raining, the levee's gonna break.

And you can take that as a metaphor or directly about the "mother of all storms" (as it was apparently dubbed by the Mayor of New Orleans yesterday) named Gustav. So is the storm a tranny?

Matt Worley would've voted for Hillary for President or Veep.
