7.27.08 Blow hards an energetic SUIT column by Chris Jungle I can't believe we actually elected these people. These Congress people. The Democrats ran on the message 'Stop the War' in 2006. America overwhelmingly said "Yea!" and elected them. The war continues without any change. I've heard the phrase 'rock star' associated with too many politicians these days, and I think it's gone to their heads. They really do believe they can hang out, get smashed, sing us a little ditty, and everything will be fine. Not so, blow hards. Not so. The latest disappointment is involving gasoline. It's true that blue-blood Americans are changing their ways by driving less, taking public transportation more, having shorted & smaller vacations, but Congress is still up to its do-nothing ways. Republicans say more drilling will bring the price of gas down, and Democrats say they should release some of oil stockpiles. Personally, I don't think either idea would do much of anything to bring down the price of gas. The oil companies do whatever they want, but those are the two sides of the congressional coin. They cannot agree enough to put anything into action, and honestly, they are way off-base altogether. There is no issue on the availability of gasoline. There are no shortages anywhere in the country. This isn't the energy crisis of the 1970s. These are the price-gauging, money-grubbing, presidential buddies getting every nickel they can from the public before the boy is out of the White House and they have to invest in something other than oil. Who is actively buying into wind and solar? The oil companies! Don't forget who owns Kraft foods these days, it's that ol' tobacco company Phillip Morris. Diversify that sinful dollar. Diversify is right. The blow hards are playing the drill vs. release game. Both of which treat the symptom and not the problem. The issue is not so much the PRICE of gas as it is the USE of gas. There were only so many dinosaurs in the world. Imagine, if you will, that we just focused on the car. You know the car, right? That god-given privilege every American believes is bestowed on them to travel anywhere and everywhere in this great land of ours. These days, people are giving up their cars. Not to an astounding degree, but they are doing it. Not because they hate their cars (we love them), but because they hate paying for the fuel. What if Congress began with kick downs for new fuel cars? What if they mandated gas efficiency? What if all new cars in America had to be gasoline free in ten years? A lot of people might buy a new car. Are you listening, Ford? That massive car company can't seem to make dollar of profit these days. Enough with the F-350 behemoth trucks, and actually make something new and efficient for a change. I'm not talking about a new version of the Ford Fiesta (which is what they are doing). I'm talking about a whole new type of car, or is the concept of NEW something only the Japanese can do with a car. Watch the domino effect, and mind you that we've gone to war over the domino effect theory before. More cars using less and less gas. Less demand for gas. Less supply needed for gas. Price of gas goes down little by little until we don't even use gas to run cars and IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER what the price is for a gallon of gas. No new drilling in Alaska. No need to release our federal reserve. No point to the debate which is going nowhere in Congress right now. It is totally pointless. The politicians just want to say they did something. They don't even care what it is they said they did. If it doesn't pass, they blame the other side. Nothing gets done. This is the way Congress has been operating since our forefathers. It's kind of twisted what Ben Franklin, James Madison and the boys have wrought. My message to Congress is screw off. Go on vacation. You couldn't solve the answer to a problem if it was printed in the back of the book. You would rather bitch about how the other side is screwing you than to realize that neither side came up with a good idea. Just keep saying your going to end that war someday, and you might just sucker us into believing it enough to vote for you again. As for the rest of us, my message is do what you can. No one is going to solve this mess for us. Not your congressman, not your favorite car company, not the oil companies, not the war in Iraq, and not the Middle East in general. We need new efficient ways of travel from here to there, and the options are slim and too expensive. Hopefully in five years, the options will be better. That's a big hope. Hang in there. Just realize that no one is on your side. When the chips are down, the government will not help you. Ask people with mortgages, ask the victims of Hurricane Katrina, ask anybody. Congress is blowing hard these days, but all that hot air isn't being used for one ounce of usable energy. Maybe we should start investing in hot air.
