9.30.07 Fall into me by Matt Worley Temperature wise, there is a perfect time of year in Albuquerque, and this is it. Early fall. Late summer is alright, but once the night time starts hitting the 50s, effectively cooling off days that can still be rather sweat inducing, then it's the right time. Next week the balloons start flying, and it's staying cool for hours after dawn. Should be a good time in the old town. I'm still mostly in shorts and bare feet, even into the cooler nights. But the windows in my room get closed at sleepy time (a week or so of waking up with a stuffed head mandated this) and opened when it's still warm outside. The inverse of summer. The swamp cooler hasn't come on in weeks, and the heater has even more weeks to go before it gets any attention. Just open or close windows and doors to regulate the air. Everyone is walking their dogs and babies, getting runs in or just strolling through the neighborhood. Kids streak by on scooters and skateboards or just run after those with extra locomotion. The roadrunners are back again, and so are the prowling cats. Ants are getting their last stores for ready for the long fast. All the little flies are gone, and the spiders are getting fat on the leftovers. Lots of houses are for sale, and we all just shrug. Where do people want to move? It's perfect right now, so why spoil it? There will be grilling this afternoon for no other reason than it's really nice outside. The smell will be in the air. Quite a pleasant way to spend the day. Occasionally fighter jets streak by. Commercial airliners wing through, but the uptick in air traffic is mostly from light planes gliding over the city. Taking last bird's eye looks at the town before it's too late. And even though there is a winter coming up sometime in the next month or two, I can't worry about it now. I do have to get new furry feet, but I don't need them yet. I'm almost inclined to take off next week entirely. Do nothing but appreciate this wonderful weather. But then again, what am I taking off from? Something I'm sure. There are important things going on in the world. I just can't remember what they are right now. I can't concentrate on the outrage. I can't find empathy for anything right now. It's too nice. And so I must cut this short. I can't spend too much time complaining about the state of the world right now. I'm just going to go appreciate my geological place in the world.
