6.17.07 The malaise by Matt Worley
29% approval rating for the President. Pretty much everyone did something other than watch the NBA finals (even with the guarantee of a shot of Eva Longoria for every five minutes of play--she should have gotten the MVP. Oh wait, she did.). And, even though more people watched "The Sopranos" final show than the finals AND the Tonys (Tony beat the Tonys?), no one seemed to like that either. Other than to make up strange conspiracy theories about how Tony got whacked or died right after the camera went to black. Everything sucks. Interestingly, the President is looking the best out of all of this. By the numbers, anyway. The Republicans don't like any of their 2008 candidates, so they're starting to get behind an actor who hasn't quite declared he's running. But he acts presidential. The Democrats don't even want to hear from any of the candidates unless their name is Clinton, Obama or Edwards. Because we have to make up our minds right now! At least they all have good hair this time. No one seems to like anything that's happening in this country (except for the stock market, which everyone is dumping all of their savings into--and here I thought no one had any savings), but we're not doing anything about it either. I saw people on Central with Honk for Peace signs Friday night. I kind of giggled, but I didn't honk. There was, as I drove through, just one little high pitched honk. And this was in liberal Nob Hill. I was just wondering if the sign holders got drunk first or if they'd have a victory drunk later. I don't like to honk my horn, and I don't want to hear anyone else's either. Honks disrupt my peaceful and buzzed drive home. Honks are so rude and intrusive--how can they represent peace? The biggest show of outrage in the last six months has been about red light and speeding cameras in Albuquerque. It's unconstitutional. It's a cash cow for the cops and city. It's a travesty of justice. It's a good reason to make those city council meetings go on even longer. All of the above. Check. So what has happened? Nothing. They keep talking about it. They figure it'll go away if they do nothing for long enough. Remind you of any other policies in this country? Six months ago, when the red light camera thing came up, the spokesman for the cops said that license plate blockers (either a plastic shield or spray on thing) don't work. They are a waste of money. And then, pretty much right after saying this, they started giving tickets to people who use these sophisticated "technologies" in order to not get nabbed by the big brother cameras. Because they "obstruct" viewing the license plate. Exactly what the cops said these things didn't do. Cops lie. Guess that's why we have so many of them. And cameras, too. I'm so glad they're in charge. Because that's what I expect of leaders and people who enforce laws: lies and propaganda. But we can't do anything about that either. We can't fix immigration. We can't get out of Iraq. We can't do anything about global warming (it's not really happening anyway). We can't have peace in the Middle East. We can't get China to do anything we want. Or Russia (geez, didn't we save them from themselves just fifteen years ago?). We can't have our cake and eat it too. And no one can explain why we can't eat the cake we have. It's just gonna go bad sitting there like that. None of the summer movies are any good. All of the trilogies end bloated and open-ended. We don't want to finish anything, and we don't want anything new either. But we want everything new. And shiny and fuel efficient. And the same as it ever was. Gas went down a couple of cents. Open up the fucking champagne.
