5.20.07 Quagmire a confused SUIT column by Chris Jungle We can't debate enough. Support the troops. Bring them home. War funds with a time table. Bill is vetoed. Give it a chance. Get out now. We are so wrapped up in the debate that I'm not sure what we're really trying to accomplish. They said it was to get Saddam, and they got him. They said it was for democracy, and they voted. They said it was to help a fledgling government, and we have. They said it's where we can fight the terrorists, and we do. They say if we leave, civil war will ensue. Didn't that happen in our wonderful democracy? Meanwhile back at the pump, gas prices are at an all time high in America. This means they are at an all time high in Europe (over eight bucks a gallon). Every day adds another nickel to the price. There are no protests in the streets, no vandalism on gas stations, no real public outcry. We could change, but that would be different. Let's pay more to keep the same routine. Are these two things connected? OF COURSE! How many times did I hear how the oil revenue was going to fund the war effort, reconstruction process, and pave the way for democracy in the Middle East. None of those things have occurred. American tax payers pay for the war, there is no reconstruction, and it turns out no one really wants democracy on the other side of the world. If America was just starting out today, I bet we wouldn't have created a democracy the way our forefathers imagined. We don't even care about the Iraqi people. We never did. Want me to prove it? Name five Iraqis. Any five. See? They mean nothing to you. Or me. It's all about our troops now. Three service men have gone missing, and it's a hot story. Dozens of Iraqis go missing, and it doesn't matter at all. To fund or not to fund? That is the question. Whether tis nobler to stay in an unpopular & unsuccessful & lengthy minor conflict, or leave with a fortified embassy for militants to bomb. People have said that America made the mess, so we have to stay and clean it up. Why? You mean like what we did in Vietnam? In Korea? In Berlin? What precedent are they implying? We can't even reconstruct New Orleans in a peaceful US of A. Why do you think we could reconstruct a war torn country we don't really care about at all? The president will veto anything with a time table. The president will veto short term funding with progress reports. The president will veto anything but a blank check. You know, if anyone gave me a blank check with no time table for resolution, I would make sure the thing they're paying me for keeps going on and on and on and on until the money runs out and I have to ask for more funds again. Then I would ask for another blank check. You have to give these things a chance to work. And gas prices rise. Have you noticed? Climate changes are occurring all over the globe. We have all admitted it. We will do nothing about it. We can't really. We are the problem. We are the ants scurrying all over the globe, and who really cares about the ants? When was the last time we made a really good choice as a nation? When was the last time we were a beacon of hope and light for the rest of humanity? Call me a cynic or whatever you want, but I just don't have faith in mankind this days. I don't think we make many good choices as a whole. I think we are selfish. I think we are dangerous. The more I hang out in public, the more my anti-social tendencies creep up. And the ants keep crawling. Are these things connected? You better believe it. Welcome to The Quagmire of 2007. The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah! The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah...
