Full moon fever
by Matt Worley

I don't know if you've heard this, but election day is Tuesday. Today is the full moon. I'm not sure if the influence of the moon will do anything to the vote, but there does seem to be craziness in the air.

This morning on the political talk shows moderators were having trouble keeping their guests under control. Which meant everyone was yelling at the same time, and you couldn't understand what anyone was saying. Maybe this was just a replication of the back to back to back commercials on every single channel. Eventually it all just turns into a shrill whistle of nothing.

I'm ready for this to be over.

I'm ready for football to be the most important thing to talk about on Sundays.

I'm worn out. I'm going to collapse after filling out my ballot. We have paper ballots this year in New Mexico, and I think I'm going to have to fill in little ovals like in high school. I'm going to ask for a glass of water and some air. I vote at the State Fairgrounds, so I might just walk over to the casino across the parking lot. Gambling is kinda like voting. No matter what happens, you lose.

But this is getting ridiculous. The most expensive congressional seat in the whole United States (spending by both sides put together) is my district. The fight to represent Albuquerque has almost devolved into an actual boxing match. And these are women fighting. And, like boxing, it all seems fixed. They spend over five million dollars fighting for a job that pays $165K a year. Just don't seem right.

Interestingly, our governor raised about thirteen million to keep his job--which actually pays less than the congressional seat. And the gov didn't even have to mention the name of the guy running against him once. He just ran a ton of ads about what a great guy he is. Of course, he's probably running for President in 2008, so this was just a warm up. And he's done something the Prez has never done: he's actually talked to the North Koreans.

At least Saddam Hussein was found guilty of being Saddam Hussein. I was beginning to think there was no justice in the world. Of course, he's appealing. Now, if they televise his hanging (whew, they are on top of the most efficient ways to kill a guy "humanely" there in Iraq--why not strap him to a Humvee and have him run over an IED?), will that be a snuff film? Will they show it 24/7 on our news stations? Will it be commercial free or will it be sponsored by Depends adult undergarments?

Yep, that full moon is getting to me.

So, y'know, remember to vote on Tuesday. I've got a little note on my "things to do" list for the week, just in case I forget.

I'm sure there are important issues you need to remember when you go into the booth (do we still have booths with the paper ballots or a desk with number 2 pencils?), and hopefully you're up on them. The League of Women Voters has guides. The newspapers have all come out with their endorsements. My voter ID card was lost in the mail.

Should be fun. We should do this every year or two. Can the candidates use their left over campaign finances to buy dead air instead of commercials for the day or two after the election? I mean, if that was a campaign promise, I'd vote for whoever does that. The TV stations still get the cash, but we don't have to hear about the most horrible people in the world (y'know, everyone running for office is apparently the devil incarnate and there are documents and phone records to prove it), AND we won't be told to consult our doctor about our inability to "go." Or that we're always "going."

Is there a cure for the upcoming election hangover? Can I get it over the counter?

As long as it doesn't come in a roll on applicator I use to coat my forehead, I'm down.

Go away. Stop calling. The world isn't coming to an end, and you aren't my savior, so just quit it.
