Failure fatigue
by Jon Worley

I'd like to get worked up about the Miers nomination, but I really don't care. It's low comedy of the highest order, but that's about it.

Somewhat the reverse is true of Iraq, which is high comedy of the lowest order. But still, I can't get all worked up about that, either. I've been preaching against this goddamned war for almost four fucking years, folks, and I'm pooped. I find it amusing that prominent aides to the Prez and the Creepy Veep are likely to find themselves under indictment. Amusing, but not especially compelling. These days, skillful political operatives shave as many corners as possible. I'd be appalled, but then, that would mean that I'm not paying attention.

Same goes for Tom Delay. I'm tired of old, rich white guys bitching and moaning about how they're being held back. Really. Hmm. How interesting.

Schmucks.

And yes, it's quite possible that the Prez is leading the most immoral administration in the history of this nation. Not the most corrupt, of course, as mere mortals would be hard pressed to eclipse the malfeasance of the Harding or Grant administrations. But when it comes to making moral decisions on behalf of our nation, I think the Prez has proven himself hopelessly inept.

Even that, though, isn't enough to raise my hackles this week. And don't try to tempt me with energy policy missteps or education policy screw ups or any of the other spectacular failures of the Prez and his pals. I don't need to shout a damned thing from the rooftops; the failure is obvious to all, and is being recognized as such by an ever increasing number of people.

I'm tired of reading about this failure, and I'm tired of the failure itself. While I have never voted for anyone named "Bush" (I even voted for a Communist Worker Party candidate over some Democrat named Bush back when I lived in Kansas City), it's not like I wanted to have to endure this level of incompetence in the executive branch of my national government. I have said repeatedly that I hope I'm wrong about what I see in Iraq (and any number of other things), and I'm sincere about that. I don't want to see the Prez fail just to prove I'm a smart guy. Shit, I'm smart whether or not the Prez proves capable of doing his job. It's just my blowhard opinions that might suffer a bit if I'm proved wrong, and honestly, that just doesn't matter much.

I'm tired. I'm tired of watching my leaders make the same stupid mistakes day after day, week after week, and I'm tired of writing about them. I'm so tired, I can't even find the energy to write something cute about Sam, who has learned to crawl and say "da da" and "ma ma" and "maaaaa" (Max).

Maybe next week.

Jon Worley is not too tired to drink a beer. Like, maybe, a fine Dogfish Head 90 Minute Pale Ale or Avery Kaiser Imperial Octoberfest. Or something like that.
