A broken poem
by Matt Worley

Just like all the other times before, I pushed the

Buttons have been separated from the shirt
Be careful to make sure they follow

The line was drawn a long time ago
Before the coming of the dawn
Before anyone was ready to step

Out of the portal, I can't see a damn thing
Is it safe to come out yet?
Will it ever be safe?
Better bury your

Head downtown and take a right
You have to buy the ticket
To take the ride
To get where you need to go
But nobody wants

A million dollars in nickels left on the sidewalk by rabid slot machiners
Choices become absolutes
Dogma becomes law
There is no truth when lies are made legal
Stamped with a seal of blood from the fallen
The confused can't ever untie the disparate strands from the

Mess up your plate so it looks like you ate
The peas represent your ideals
The carrots are the quicksand grand towers sink their foundations in
Gravy covers everything, making it all one and then nothing
Are you done, honey?
Do you want me to take this away?
There can't be anything left

To do the right thing is not as easy as it looks
Why is everything a need to the needy when we all want so much?
I can't count anymore
I can't make the numbers add up to anything significant
There's just this big pile of stuff in the middle of a circle of guns
The stuff is protected while the self suffers
The self is willing to give itself up for the stuff
The stuff doesn't give a

Shit. It's all happening again.

Matt Worley can't seem to find his way out of the mall of America.
