The first of the big bunches of Democratic primaries happens this week. For the first time ever, New Mexico is actually involved when there is still a choice to be made. Instead of waiting until June, when the nominee is announcing his VP and everyone else has been left in the dust, New Mexico is throwing its two cents into the hat now.

Of course, just to be different, New Mexico Democrats are having a caucus. Not one of those caucuses where everyone gets in a church basement and yells at each other, but a primary-type caucus. The difference between a primary and caucus for us is that this vote is run by the Democratic Party, and not the state. And you can only vote from noon to 7 on Tuesday, rather than 7 to 7 like most elections.

I have made up my mind about this race for the Democratic nominee for President. I'm not voting in the caucus/primary. My view is whoever the party decides on is who I'm voting for in November. I'm voting for whoever is against Bush.

This may sound simplistic and maybe off-putting to the people who have been pushing for one of the Democrats, but it's the truth. I don't care. I would have voted for Gephardt, but I'm rather glad I won't have to. I'd even vote for Lieberman, but I don't think I'll have to do that either. And I'm pretty sure I won't have to vote for Kucinich, but I'd feel just fine if I did. The point is, I'm voting in November to kick this current president out of power. I'm not gonna get pulled down into the muddy ranks of the primaries. I'll just watch and let those who have more of a passion for this sort of thing duke it out.

I'm not endorsing the "don't vote" ticket, however. I really do think everyone should use their voice and let the party know who they want--if they have a preference. Everyone who has been aghast at the machinations of the current president's administration needs to understand this election in November will not be a cakewalk. We all have to come together and vote the bastard and his cronies out of the White House.

Sitting out of the primaries is basically acknowledging that none of the Democrat candidates are "my man." I'm more liberal than all of them. I have different views on many issues. I think all of them are full of shit in one way or another. But one thing I'm pretty sure of is this: none of these guys will throw us willy-nilly into an unjust war. None of them will wager hundreds of billions of dollars on a personal vanity nation-building project, and lie about the reasons to do it. None of them will make me feel so bad about being an American as Bush has in three years.

That's the skinny. That's the whole deal. It's about getting Bush out of power. Nothing else matters.

Matt Worley is kind of expecting it to be a Kerry/Edwards ticket in November, but he's not really a betting man with these sorts of things.
