California scheming
a recalled SUIT column by Chris Jungle

I don't live in California. I don't have aspirations to move to California. That doesn't stop me from thinking something seriously wrong is going on. Democratic Governor Gray Davis is on the verge of being recalled from office. Due to mass petitions spearheaded by Republicans, they tallied enough signatures to send the recall vote to the public, and now, politicians of all variety are coming out of the woodwork to stake their claim to the highest office in the state.

At last count, there are between 150 and 160 candidates on the ballot. Larry Flynt and Arnold Schwarzenegger make up the celebrity aspect of the election. The Lieutenant Governor has thrown his name in hat (thanks for all your support of the administration, guy). Toss in dozens of folks who have served the spectrum of public office, and you've got yourself a circus style election fit for the left coast.

Everyone will agree that California is in some serious trouble. Energy crisis, massive debt, and mismanagement have put the state into turmoil. Of course, these issue are there on the national level, but you will not see a recall or impeachment of the president. For the same reason, I don't think people of California should recall their governor.

I know very little about Gray Davis. From all reports, he is a hard-core fund-raiser, a ruthless and mean-spirited candidate in elections, and not apologetic for much of anything. Even with all these questionable qualities, the voters of California still re-elected him to a second term in 2002. Nine months after working the democratic system, the state decides that the electoral process didn't work and they are misrepresented? Sounds flaky to me.

Again, let's recall the 2000 presidential election. Ha ha, get it? Bush wins the electoral college, and Gore wins the popular vote. By law of the land, Bush is president due to our antiquated, yet completely legal, way to become president. Do we change the system? No, we move on. Personally, I feel I have been grossly misrepresented since that election, but I'm hanging in there. Never wanted to go to war in Iraq, never wanted our surplus blown on the military endeavors, never wanted most of the initiatives of the administration. That's just the way it goes.

Now that things have gone astray in California, even the administration admits a successful recall is likely. Why? Because things are lousy, and it's not our fault. We don't want to hang in there. Let's quit and start over. Bunch of babies, if you ask me.

Who's the most likely possibility for the new governor? The Terminator! Say it together: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In a short campaigning process (less than three months), name recognition goes a long way, and Arnold has more letters than probably any of the other candidates. After four months of trying to recall the governor, California's savior will likely come in the form of an actor who has never held a political office. Somewhere, Jesse Ventura is laughing his head off, and he doesn't even know why. Somewhere else, Ronald Reagan is staring off into the distance.

You can't fix your problems with quick fixes. If the voters make the wrong decision at the polls, then they get what they deserve. That's called democracy. The Republicans are a bunch of vindictive sore losers who jump on any chance they get to tarnish a Democrat in office, and visa versa. It's a ugly nasty game when things are going badly.

Just in case you didn't know, things are pretty fucked up at home and abroad right now because of this country, and the worst qualities of man are in full force.

Hang in there.
