3.3.02 The phantoms on your right don't really exist by Matt Worley Right there, beside the little elephant. That's where I usually put them. So just remember to look there next time. It seems like the car is starting to lose first gear sometimes. A slight pause and then, bam, it slams into green. You know when it goes, it's gonna be at the totally wrong time. I can't really explain myself clearly. The wine began after work, the beer began after wine, and I'm not really sure what the time is. You'll have to get back to me when the unexplained have explanations. Things'll be much clearer then. There's a section on the highway where all the lanes get two feet smaller for about three miles. The number of lanes stay the same, but they just get smaller. Suddenly there's a huge double semi bouncing down the lane, going 60, and you know you can't stay next to it or everything is going to be toast. Push it and get out of the way because two feet sometimes is the difference between red and green. The recession is ending. This is what they're telling us. Only a month or two after they actually admitted that a recession was on in the first place. So I have to wonder, are they jumping the gun? It's still not a good time to get fired, is it? The singles are fine, it's just when you put them in the middle of everything else that things get blurry and nothing seems right. Too something, you know. Too much. But you are sweet. I really mean that. Now stop looking at me. It's always halfway down the ladder when you realize the web wasn't ever really put up well in the first place. And in a few moments all the strands and all the support lines will be down. You could blame someone, but it doesn't really help. Not when everyone already knows. Is it better to wear a cheap suit with nice shoes, or forgo the suit, put on a snazzy shirt and hope those west coasters are as laid back as we are? The cold snap is expected to last only a couple of days. And then it'll be back to normal. Back to nifty. Back to between fifty and sixty. It is late winter; it will get cold from time to time. The full moon last week was the closest the moon will be to the Earth this year. Which could explain most of this, but it still doesn't quite illustrate why I'm running on three hours of sleep. The souped-up black El Camino was on my ass, so I pulled my foot off the accelerator to let him know it was time to back off. After about five quick and risky lane changes, the El Camino was just ahead of me on the off ramp. But he didn't know how to drive in the city and didn't try to pull the same shit once he was off the highway. I beat him by blocks, although, I'm not totally sure where he was going. But he sure didn't beat me home. So all this shit, you can't tell anyone. It's all a secret between you and me. Because it's more special that way. It makes us feel like we've got something to hide and something to revel in at the same time. You have to act natural when you see me in the hallway. Don't let the teachers know. They can smell impropriety, and we'll both be in the shitter if they find out. This is how we keep it tight and fresh. Because, if we didn't have this, what would we have? What would it mean? Would we even be talking? Would we even care at all? Oh yeah, and I need those CDs back when you can. It's not really that they mean everything to me, but more that they don't mean as much to you. Did that sound bitchy?
