1.13.02 Dreams vs. Reality a realized SUIT column by Chris Jungle We all have versions of the way things should be, and we want them to happen so badly that we lose sight of the way things are. I think if people took more time examining the reality of situations, they might be able to deal with everything a little better. Here's a few examples of the differences between dream scenarios and reality: Dream--If we can just find Omar and bin Laden and bring them to justice, we will have defeated terrorism, won the war, and we can get back to the way things were. Reality--Terrorism doesn't have a leader. It only takes one Unabomber, Timothy McViegh, suicide pilot, or anthrax letter to create terror. This is a war that will not end, because like the war on drugs, we are fighting a concept and not a nation or figurehead. Dream--The Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City will unite the world and show the everyone how great the American spirit can be. Reality--The Winter Olympics don't involve most warm weather nations, and Sweden and Finland already like us. The American spirit became clear when it was revealed that Salt Lake City officials blatantly bribed the IOC to win the site. Even after the bribes became public, Salt Lake City still hosts the games. Dream--Our president is far too busy keeping our nation safe to be involved with the rise and fall of Enron. Reality--Presidents are never too busy to make a business deal. With all of the donations and contributions candidates receive from big business, it is impossible not to assume that they are involved with the dealings of many major corporations. It's only illegal if people can prove it. Dream--Americans have access to the most cultural and enlightening forms of education. More and more Americans are going to college. We're getting smarter. We're getting better. Reality--As a whole, Americans still spend more than they have, eat more than they need, consume more than they require, and get most of their information from TV and movies. Not so smart, guys. Dream--Your true love is out there. Reality--Your true love is out there, but many people think it's okay to abandon, cheat on, neglect or downright ignore their true love after a few months or years. Loving your true love isn't always easy, but it's worth more than many people realize. Dream--I will have lots of money, own my home, be admired by thousands of people, and live out the American Dream. Reality--The more you make money your goal, the less appreciation you have for the free and simple enjoyments life has to offer. Plus you'll become a real self-centered son of a bitch. Dream--My team is going to win the Super Bowl! Reality--Unless your team is the St. Louis Rams or your defense can figure out how to make Kurt Warner throw multiple interceptions, it ain't going to happen. Nevertheless, go Bears and Steelers! Dream--Peace, love and happiness for everyone on the globe. Reality--It can't hurt to try to make this place better for everyone. Instead of war on a concept, let's try peace on a concept. Oops, looks like I'm back to dreaming again.
