| 4/9/26: Effable, if just At first, the Corner Laughers feel so ephemeral that it seems the music might simply evaporate. But after a couple of songs, the intricacies behind the band's gentle pop reveal themselves more fully. Not many have dared to ply the waters of mid-career Simon and Garfunkel (because, holy hell!), but this quartet's effervescence is so winning (and its influences so wide ranging) that such a comparison becomes an afterthought.
This is the sort of music I think about when I tell people I really don't believe in kid's music. Okay, so mine grew up on Bad Religion and Emmylou Harris (and a lot of much more obscure stuff), but these songs are perfect for sing alongs, which work oh-so-well with kids. Even better, these songs are complex enough to keep adults enthralled as well. As Spring begins its annual show, it's great to have an album that celebrates the renewal of life. In truth, given the current times, a blinding ray of light is always welcome. The Corner Laughers have put in the effort to craft a fine set of effortlessly enchanting songs. The spell has been cast. | |
