1/29/26:
By the grace

Kinda the definition of well-mannered folk, Eric Brace and Thomm Jutz continue their long-running collaboration with their second set as a duo. And while it's certainly true that there are very few detours or unexpected moments, Brace and Jutz's well-honed harmonies and playing never fail to please.

The lack of surprises does not mean a dearth of wonderful moments. This contemplative set rambles over a wide variety of topics, including the passing of former collaborator Peter Cooper (whose loss is why they're a duo now). More often, however, they're musing on the nature of art with songs like "Thomas Hart Benton" and "Diego in Detroit".

I've long been a fan of their professionalism. As is obvious by what I'm writing, I'm always slightly held back by that same attribute. This album, more than most of theirs, has a gravity that makes its formal presentation a real plus. When you're saying something important, it's a good idea to get the underpinnings right.

If there's one thing these guys are good at, it's dotting the Is and crossing the Ts. There are no false steps on this set, and the sound is luminous as usual. This is one to savor.
