10/3/25:
More than a strum

Larry Keel and Jon Stickley are much better known on their own. Both are stellar flatpicking guitarists, and both have a knack for finding a way to the heart of a song even while shredding. If you hadn't thought about it before, shredding on an acoustic guitar is much harder than on an electric. I know that's obvious, but I thought it had to be said.

Larry Keel & Jon Stickley EP
(Keel Fish Music)

This short set contains two Keel songs, two Stickley instrumentals and rendition of Steve McMurry's "Sailor Suit". The EP blows by fast, but its impact is immense. Stickley and Keel's vocals mix just as well as their playing, and the whole package sparkles with something approaching perfection. Or, if you like, confection.

Because this set is just too sweet. The moments of interplay between the two guitars are mind-bending, and it's impossible not to get lost in the flurry of playing and singing. These guys are having a grand old time, and we all get to listen in.

Who knows if they'll record together again. Sometimes a sublime set like this is enough, knowing that something more might not approach the wonder created here. If you're not familiar with Stickley or Keel (chances are you know both or neither), this is a perfect introduction to two guitar masters. Bathe in the goodness.
