5/19/25:
Some noise from Brasil

The title translates as Noise-making, the Garage of Seven Memories. Edson Natale and Paulo Brandão have crafted seven symphonies of samples. Just about everyone would classify it as noise. But precisely what kind?

Natale and Brandão have taken samples of more than 1,000 sounds and woven them together. As many of the snippets are pieces of conversations, I suppose it might be easier to comprehend this if you knew Portuguese. But I think this is meant to be appreciated as sound, and not as anything literal. The natural dances of everyday rhythms mixing with more formal musical expressions and then wandering around a few corners.

The sound is probably the most arresting part. Natale and Brandão have taken great care to emphasize the sounds they want to emphasize, and those sonic beats mean something. Or do they? Maybe there's a statement about everyday life being drowned out. Or maybe it's a celebration of everyday beauty and what surrounds it.

Every minute or two I change my mind. This music (and yes, it is music) requires extensive listening and pondering. Prepare to make your brain sweat. The small illuminated bits keep me searching for more. Brazil isn't exactly known for fostering this sort of sonic experimentation. Then again, this is precisely the sort of music that exists in the dark corners. Luckily, this set is more than rigorous enough to withstand plenty of bright, shiny examination. If you lose yourself, you'll find something else.
