Boring in

More wild music from Wales. Gallops hails from Wrexham (yes, that one) and up to now has been known for more club-friendly fare. This five-piece set delves into darker electronic territory. Think more Skinny Puppy than Giorgio Moroder (though there are plenty of references to both).

Definitely a shift from moving the ass to moving the mind. Gallops introduces concepts and proceeds to examine and dissect them, all within a dark techno space. Thirty years ago, this sort of brain-expanding fare was common. I'm always glad to hear it whenever it wanders down the pike these days.

Also, this is music from Wales, but not Welsh-language music. The titles are in English and there are no lyrics (I'm hoping the latter bit was obvious by now, but there are reasons to distrust the thoughts of an AARP member. . .). That's kinda here-nor-there, but given all of the Welsh alterna-rock I've reviewed during the past couple of years, I thought I'd make the point.

Hypnotic, brooding and occasionally pummeling. Gallops has made some delicious music in the past, but this is more ambitious and far more accomplished. Dive into the dark and see if you can escape. If not, it is a glorious doom.
