4/29/19: Well burnished Very few bands use the entire metal toolbox. Roaring guitars that don't quite overwhelm a simple piano line. Vocal rasps laid over melodic riffage. Dynamic and tempo changes that actually tell a story rather than simply shift gears without purpose. You know, the good stuff.
So the prevalence of the piano--in a non-goth setting--isn't surprising or off-putting. Unmasked takes its time to get to the point, but these songs are so well-made that I can't complain. And unlike some of the Maiden epics (which could drag), these songs build relentlessly, the momentum increasing incessantly. The climaxes are as satisfying as the buildup. Probably not the most accessible album, especially if you're looking for instant gratification. But put in the time and Unmasked delivers. Gorgeous power, with plenty of room to roam. I got lost, and I'm not sure I want to find my way home. |
