7/9/18:
Quiet thunder

Brad Lyons released his first Oceanship album nine years ago on Arista. Sales were ho-hum, the music industry imploded, his label disappeared and . . . now this.

Lyons does pretty much everything, which is impressive given the symphonic settings of his songs. This is pop music that sounds important. The songs tend to a mellow anthemic construction (think Seal), but hold on to your breath when the hooks catch at the climax.

I'm a terrible judge of what might or might not be commercially viable. Lyons is a clear master of this sound, and I found it impossible not to be swept up in the majesty of his songs. In another time, this would be a slam-dunk. These days? Can't say.

Nine years well spent. Lyons has crafted a wonderful album. Here's hoping more folks take notice.
